چکیده
The lithium abundances in metal-poor halo stars are of importance for cosmology, galaxy evolution and stellar structure. In an attempt to study possible systematic errors in the derived Li abundances, the line formation of Li i lines has been investigated by means of realistic 3D hydrodynamical model atmospheres of halo stars and 3D non-LTE radiative transfer calculations. These are the first detailed 3D non-LTE computations reported employing a multi-level atomic model showing that such problems are now computationally tractable. The detailed computations reveal that the Li i population has a strong influence from the radiation field rather than the local gas temperature, indicating that the low derived Li abundances found by Asplund et al. (1999) are an artifact of their assumption of LTE. Relative to 3D LTE, the detailed calculations show pronounced overionization. In terms of abundances the 3D non-LTE values are within 0.05 dex of the 1D non-LTE results for the particular cases of HD140283 and HD84937, which is a consequence of the dominance of the radiation in determining the population density of Li i. Although 3D non-LTE can be expected to give results rather close (≈ ±0.1 dex) to 1D non-LTE for this reason, there may be systematic trends with metallicity and effective

The impact of non-LTE effects and granulation inhomogeneities on the derived iron and oxygen abundances in metal-poor halo stars
This paper presents the results of a detailed theoretical investigation of the impact of non-LTE effects and of granulation inhomogeneities on the derived iron and oxygen abundances in the metal-poor halo subgiant HD140283. Our analysis is based on both the ‘classical’ one-dimensional (1D) stellar atmosphere models and on the new generation of three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamical models. The n...
متن کاملNon-LTE Analysis for the Sodium Abundances of Metal-Poor Stars in the Galactic Disk and Halo
We performed an extensive non-LTE analysis of the neutral sodium lines of Na i 5683/5688, 5890/5896, 6154/6161, and 8183/8195 for disk/halo stars of F– K type covering a wide metallicity range (−4 ∼< [Fe/H] ∼< 0.4), based on our own data as well as those collected from the literature. For comparatively metal-rich disk stars (−1 ∼< [Fe/H] ∼< 0) where the weaker 6154/6161 lines are best abundance...

I present here the main results of recent realistic, 3D, hydrodynamical simulations of convection at the surface of metal-poor red giant stars. I discuss the application of these convection simulations as time-dependent, 3D, hydrodynamical model atmospheres to spectral line formation calculations and abundance analyses. The impact of 3D models on derived elemental abundances is investigated by ...

Context. The plateau in the abundance of 7Li in metal-poor stars was initially interpreted as an observational indicator of the primordial lithium abundance. However, this observational value is in disagreement with that deduced from calculations of Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN), when using the Wilkinson microwave anisotropy probe (WMAP) baryon density measurements. One of the most important f...

Non-LTE line formation calculations of Fe are performed for a small number of reference stars to investigate and quantify the efficiency of neutral hydrogen collisions. Using the atomic model that was described in previous publications, the final discrimination with respect to hydrogen collisions is based on the condition that the surface gravities as determined by the Fe /Fe ionization e...
